Bonita Carmen Guy (Douthwaite) passed away on November 29, 2019 at her residence in Concord. She was born on June 27, 1935 to the late Robert P. and Craythie Shell Guy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister: Mary Elizabeth Guy Gentry, and her brother: Carson Guy, who died in World War II. A native of Banner Elk, Carmen attended both Lees McRae College and Appalachian State University, receiving her teaching degree in elementary education. “Mrs. Douthwaite” taught in the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, retiring in 1993. Most of her teaching years were at Newell Elementary and later at Mallard Creek Elementary. Many of her students still visit her and tell of fond memories having her as their teacher. Carmen enjoyed owning and breeding German Shepherd Dogs, singing in the Charlotte Oratorios, hiking, skydiving, the beach, had a great love of nature, her cats and just loving life and people. Carmen leaves behind a lifelong friend and guardian, Caroleen Sanders; Tommy Thompson, who was like a son to her; and special friend, Patti Hart. Special thanks to Lorie Jones and the employees at The Gardens of Taylor Glen where Carmen spent the last years of her life. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. at the Elk Cemetery in Banner Elk. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, Cabarrus County Humane Society or to your favorite charity.Read Obituary

Ms. Carmen Guy (Douthwaite) was my beloved friend and 5th grade teacher at old Newell Elementary School on Old Concord Rd. (now Dorothy Vaughn Academy), during the 1984-85 school year. Her quiet dignity, knowledge, and self-assurance commanded the respect and admiration of students and peers alike. Mrs. Douthwaite was a lifelong inspiration for living life on your own terms and being true to one's sense of self. Mrs.Douthwaite was My 3rd Grade Teacher at Newell Elementary School. Of all the Teachers I had and know all of there Names from 1st grade to 12th. She was My Most Favorite and most inspiring. I Never forgot Her and whenever School was mentioned, She always came to mind. I just found out about Her passing. My deepest Sympathies are with Her and Family. She was an Awesome Teacher and Person. I never had a Teacher as Great as Her. To Me if all Teachers were as Her We would be in a better place today. Sincerely, Sean McMahan.

Carmen was a most caring person. She love life and all God’s creatures. I met Carmen when she was teaching and can remember how much her students loved her. She was especially gifted to be able to guide her students through their school years.

She was loved by all those she met and never met a stranger. I enjoy singing in the
Sugaw Creek church choir with her. She will always be a bright light that shines always in my life.
